William Penn Adair Rogers is an American film and stage actor, variety artist, cowboy, comedian, journalist, and social commentator from Oklahoma. He is a Cherokee citizen born in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. Known as "Oklahoma's favorite son," Rogers was born into a Cherokee family in the Indian Territory. As an artist and comedian, he has traveled the world three times, directed 71 films, and written more than 4,000 national press categories. In the mid-1930s, Rogers was extremely popular in the United States for his heightened political spirit and the highest-paid star among Hollywood movie stars. He died in 1935, at the age of 55 with the pilot Wiley Post when his plane crashed in northern Alaska. Rogers' variety jumping action led to success in Ziegfeld Follies, which in turn led to his first of many films. His appearances as a columnist and radio in the 1920s increased his visibility and popularity.
